A word from the architect
Asunto Oy Töölön Castellum, Helsinki is situated centrally in the Töölö district, at the interface of a block area combining two different scales. This block is part of a nationally-significant built urban environment. The buildings’ timeless, subdued architecture adheres to the scale of the surrounding building stock, and both the calm rhythm of the windows and the balconies facing onto the yard are intended to fit with the spirit of Töölö. The central courtyard area in the block offers a green, park-like feel.
The apartments’ clear layout solutions can be adapted to a range of life situations and the rooms are generously dimensioned. The windows, extending almost to the roof, allow light to flood deep into the apartment. The internal spaces and details are also well considered. The materials used in the apartments are of high quality, with the interiors carefully designed. The buildings’ external walls are solid and built on site, while the intermediate walls are concrete poured in place, ensuring that the apartments’ ceiling surfaces are even, with no visible seams. The radiators have also been chosen in accordance with Töölö’s functionalist spirit. The balconies face onto a calm courtyard and are glazed. The penthouse apartments on the top floor offer perfectly-angled open terraces.
The location, near the heart of the city centre, is excellent and easy, with natural connections in every direction. A new tram line is planned to run along Topeliuksenkatu.

The basement floor is also home to the technical facilities for the buildings and the complex’s shared spaces: a civil defence shelter, a laundry room, drying rooms, storage facilities for household items and strollers,a gym, and one of the complex’s saunas. The ground floor of the Herttuatar building features commercial premises (77 m2, 43 m2), a waste room, outdoor equipment storage facilities, another sauna, the complex’s lounge space, and a space ready to become a post service room. On the ground floor of the Välskäri and Paroni buildings you will find additional storage for outdoor equipment.
Töölö – a great place to live
Töölö is one of Finland’s top-rated residential areas and just a stone’s throw from the centre of Helsinki. The aim when building the district, which began in the early 20th century, was to harmonise the cityscape, with individual buildings adhering to jointly agreed guidelines covering everything from storey height to roof shape. The 1920s and 1930s saw the most significant phase in the area’s construction, the story of which can today be seen in Töölö’s distinctive classic ‘20s brick buildings and light and bright ‘30s functionalist buildings.
Töölö is known for its closed blocks lined with charming street-level shops, with the peaceful inner courtyards hiding unique urban environments and secret gardens. This area, which forms a key part of the cityscape, is also home to a range of nationally and internationally significant public buildings, such as the Opera House and Finlandia Hall, the National Museum of Finland, and Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
